Vincent Epplay is both a visual artist and a musician who
conceieves and builds sound
environments.
Through his installations and live interventions, he has been
questionning the
connection between sound and image, the display context (duration, place)
and the relation
with the “audio-viewer”.
He generates objects, situations and
contexts wherein tiny flaws,
slides, incongruities come to disrupt our listening habits: Corridors whisper
- Voices can be
heard in the Paris Metro - A digital clock is equipped with a different ring
tone for each
minute of the day. In the phone booths, one must keep silent in order to
listen. A mobile radio
station is carried in a light-gray flight case on wheels, together with mini
radio sets, free to use
to listen to RadioShack. An infinite audio CD and a jukebox without a playlist.

rocks and burried speakers that will bloom in the Spring

#3 - Vibrö 1

The listening booths are mobile devices meant for individual listening and sound
immersion.
This series has been developing since 1999. The customised booths are equipped
with
speakers hidden in their structure, and the sound material they display has been
evolving with
the elaboration of the piece itself. For the Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers,
each of the three booths
installed in differents spaces played a specific composition, depending on the
settling spot
and on the acoustic particularities of a given model of booth used. |

‘Cabine
d’écoute #3’ is an exerpt of the composed piece played in
the booth located in the main entrance
of the
Laboratories.
This piece deals with the ideas of stretching,
then breaking, of the insertion of fragments, of an horizontality where the
listening process takes place through a gradual immersion. Wider, equiped with
four speakers, this booth is characterised by a greater comfort, inviting the
audience to settle down for a longer span of listening.. |

and distributed.
This CD, once inserted in your computer, indefinitely generates music, always
different, always similar.
Beware that this CD does not work in your CD player, but only in your computer.
infinite CD for unlimited music contains the autonomous part of the system presented
in the performance-installation MISS MISSING SYSTEM, at the ZAC99 exhibition,
on October 28 1999, by Vincent Epplay, Joana Preiss and Antoine Schmit.The piece
unlimited web music that your are hearing now is an adaptation of the CD specifically
designed for the web, based
on a subset of the CD sounds and using the same algorithms. |

Mix Missing System
Mix Missing System est un développement en live du CD Rom de musique
générative "Infinite CD for unlimited music", réalisé par
Vincent Epplay (composition sonore) et Antoine Schmitt (programmation) .

Display Pixel
Dispositif live associant diffusion sonore et projection numérique, Display
pixel est une confrontation entre le travail sonore de V. Epplay et les travaux
d'Antoine Schmitt sur les algorythmes graphiques . Le développement génératif
du son et la projection visuelle entrent dans un rapport de confrontation / contamination.
Le dispositif déjoue en permanence l'idée d'illustration qui régit
trop souvent les rapports du son et de l'image dans leur confrontation. Les "créatures" graphiques
ne dansent pas vraiment sur cette trame sonore, pas plus que celle-ci n'accompagne
leur chorégraphie aléatoire.

A Usages Uniques - 1
(collaboration avec Laurence Rondoni et Fabrice Dasse, danseurs-chorégraphes)
Deux dispositifs sonores (un instrument de musique, le theremin et un appareil
de diffusion, le jukebox ), installés sur la scène, organisent
une expérience ouverte à une proposition choregraphique : construire
des formes de dialogue entre danseurs et objets sonores, élaborer une écriture
fondée sur l'improvisation préparée.

Mody Bleach (collaboration avec le laboratoire indépendant de cinéma
expérimental MTK)
Les quatre cinéastes du collectif grenoblois MTK et Vincent Epplay se
sont réapproprié les images et la bande son du film "Moby
Dick" de John Huston (1956) pour en abstraire une matière première
audio et visuelle qui est manipulée en direct lors de projections - performances.
