Guimbarde A - Vibrö 4
(track 06)
«Guimbarde A» was created in May 2006, for a sound and video installation by Champagn’tagada.
“The guimbard (Jew’s harp) is probably one of the oldest instruments made by par man. It can be traced back across all continents and civilisations. In 2006 I started to ‘sample’ the sounds of my mouth and breath through the guimbard in order to find a new depths and new features in my electro-acoustic music. There I found what I had been looking for: a cathartic music where ideas come from the body. Tuning into it allows basic intuitions to arise before anything becomes digital. This very instrument pulls all senses together. |

The metal tab is not enough, you have to breathe through it to produce regular spasms for pop music’s sake, and a pelvic twist for greedy eyes. Too much guimbard can damage your teeth. The electronic processing therefore comes as a relief.
I developed my practice alone, away from the public ear until, in 2004, I came across a live recording by a French singer that gave me the confidence to explore alternative uses of the instrument. Gradually, I started to play in the streets of Montmartre and perform live on several
occasions before inserting bits of this sound in my electronic ompositions.” J-F G. |
